Marist Falls In OT To Fairfield

Sagl, Cubbage Each Finish With 11 Points

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team was defeated in overtime by Fairfield, 57-53, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Friday night at McCann Arena.
 
Summary
  • Fairfield jumped out to an early 6-2 lead.
  • Marist responded with a 9-0 run, thanks to two three-pointers by Tyler Sagl and one by Jack Cavanaugh, as the Red Foxes held the Stags scoreless for 5:55.
  • Fairfield answered with seven straight points. The Stags held the Red Foxes scoreless for a span of 4:54.
  • Neither team led by more than three in the final 10 minutes of the first half. The score was tied at 19 apiece after 20 minutes.
  • Marist scored the first six points of the second half, and held Fairfield scoreless for the first 3:19.
  • A three-pointer by Matt Herasme at the 14:02 mark gave Marist a 33-24 lead, the game's largest lead to that point.
  • Fairfield re-claimed the lead on a basket by Wassef Methnani at 39-37 with 5:21 remaining, which capped a 10-0 run. On Marist's next possession, the Red Foxes took the lead back on a three-point play by Sagl.
  • The lead changed hands four times in the last 2:13 of regulation. With 1:07 remaining, Michael Cubbage drained a three-pointer to give Marist a 45-43 lead. Fairfield tied the game on a basket by Jesus Cruz with four seconds remaining. Marist was unable to score on its final possession of regulation, and the game went to overtime tied at 45.
  • The lead changed hands three times in overtime. A dunk by Vincent Eze with 2:40 remaining gave Fairfield the lead for good. Eze (five points) and Taj Benning (seven) accounted for all of 12 of Fairfield's points in the extra period.

  • Sagl and Cubbage tied for the team lead with 11 points apiece. Cubbage added a team-high with nine rebounds, and had a team-best two steals.
  • Matt Herasme added nine points and eight rebounds. Herasme was 3-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Benning scored a game-high 15 points for Fairfield. Eze tied Cubbage for the game high with nine rebounds.

  • This was Marist's fourth overtime game of the season, which ties the program's Division I record. The Red Foxes are 1-3 in overtime this season.
  • Marist is now 2-6 in games decided by five points or less this season.
  • Marist did not miss a free throw (12-for-12) for the second time in its last five games.
  • Marist's 19 points allowed in the first half were the second fewest allowed to a team in the first 20 minutes this season (17 at Niagara, Jan. 31). The 19 points scored tied a season low, previously set at Saint Peter's on Jan. 5.
