Iona Comes Back, Defeats Marist

Saint-Furcy Scores Career-High 20

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Iona on Sunday, 78-70.
 
Freshman guard Tyler Saint-Furcy led Marist with a career-high 20 points.
 
Summary
  • Marist scored the game's first five points, and jumped out to an 18-7 lead at the 13:36 mark.
  • Iona held Marist to two field goals over a six-and-a-half minute stretch, and cut its deficit to four.
  • Marist held Iona without a field goal in the final five minutes of the first half. Braden Bell scored the Red Foxes' final five points of the half, and Marist led 33-23 after the first 20 minutes.
  • Iona started the second half on a 21-2 run, and took its first lead of the game.
  • The Gaels led 48-39 with 11:35 remaining, but Marist answered with a 14-5 run over the next 3:55. A scoop-and-score from Tyler Saint-Furcy tied the game at 53.
  • Iona then re-claimed the lead, but Marist tied it twice. With 3:33 remaining, a free throw by Isaiah Washington gave the Gaels the lead for good. Iona led by as much as 10 (twice in the final minute).
 
Key Stats
  • Saint-Furcy shot 7-for-9 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range, and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. He also had four steals and three rebounds.
  • Marist finished with four double-digit scorers, including Saint-Furcy. Braden Bell had 13 and a team-high six rebounds to go along with two blocked shots and two steals. Matt Herasme had 12, and Jordan Jones scored 11.
  • Washington led all scorers with 21, and E.J. Crawford added 20 for the Gaels.
  • Iona shot 30-for-35 from the free-throw line, and went 23-for-26 in the second half.
 
Notes
  • Saint-Furcy had the Red Foxes' third 20-point game this season. Tyler Sagl had 23 against Manhattan on Jan. 22, and Herasme scored 20 against Quinnipiac on Jan. 3.
  • This was Marist's first loss this season when shooting over 40 percent from three-point range. The Red Foxes went 10-for-22 (.455) from deep.

"We had some open threes down the stretch," head coach John Dunne told the Red Fox Network following the game. "We have to make shots down the stretch and keep the other team off the foul line. Hopefully we learn from it."
