Women’s Tennis Sweeps La Salle

Red Foxes Handle Undermanned Explorers For First Spring Win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pennsylvania – Marist Women's Tennis secured its first win of the 2020 spring season with a 7-0 victory over La Salle on Saturday, February 22.

The Red Foxes boost their dual match record to 3-4 this year, and halt a four-match slide. The Explorers, who only played four student-athletes, fall to 0-5.

DOUBLES
  • The captain tandem of Julia Gabay and Sam Galu defeated Ali Snyder and Jazmin Walle 6-2 in the top flight.
  • Senior Amy Galloway and junior Sophia Chavarria also won with the same score in the second position, taking down Aleks Nikolic and Maansi Malhotra.
  • With La Salle unable to field enough players for a third doubles pair, senior Jada Tijani and freshman Nina McAllan were credited with the default victory.

SINGLES
  • Gabay and Snyder engaged in a three-set battle in the top billing. Gabay took the first set 6-3, only for Snyder to return the favor 7-5. The Red Fox outlast the Explorer in the tiebreak, 10-7.
  • Chavarria handled Walle 6-1, 6-1 for her first-career collegiate win in No. 2 singles.
  • Playing in her highest position of her rookie campaign at No. 3, McAllan held off Nikolic 6-4 in the first set, then captured the match with a 6-1 decision in the second set.
  • In the fourth flight, Galu made quick work of Malhotra, 6-1, 6-1.
  • Galloway (No. 5) and Tijani (No. 6) won by default.

QUOTE FROM THE COACH

"Both teams were compromised due to injury, but the women stayed focused and were able to come away with the victory. Julia won at first singles in a match tie break for the second week in a row, Sophia and Sam had excellent showings at two and four respectively, and Nina, who had to move up to 3, played her best tennis of the season." – Director of Tennis Gary Sussman
