Women's Lacrosse Opens Season at Colgate

Red Foxes Look for First Win Against the Raiders in Program History

HAMILTON, New York - Marist women's lacrosse opens the 2020 season on Saturday, February 8, with an afternoon matchup in Hamilton, NY. The Red Foxes are scheduled to take on non-conference opponent Colgate at 1 p.m. at Andy Kerr Stadium.

LAST SEASON
  • The Red Foxes finished 8-10 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC last season.
  • Marist entered the MAAC Championships as the #5 seed, and upset #4 Manhattan in the quarterfinals, 15-14.
  • The team went on to fall to the eventual MAAC Champion #1 Fairfield in the semifinals by a score of 18-14.
  • The Red Foxes actually had a better record on the road last season, finishing 3-4.
  • Hailey Wagner, who is now part of the Red Foxes coaching staff, was named to the All-MAAC First team, along with Samantha Mehalick. Annie Sheehy was named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
  • Wagner was also named MAAC Student Athlete of the Year, Marist Female Sportsperson of the Year, and CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team among many other accolades.
 
PRESEASON POLL
  • As decided by the league's nine head coaches, Marist received 58 points in the preseason coaches' poll (along with one first place vote) which ranked them in fourth place.
  • Fairfield and Monmouth each received 70 points and were picked to finish in a tie for first place.
  • Siena finished right behind them in third place with 69 points. After Marist was Manhattan (34), Quinnipiac (33), Niagara (29), Canisius (28), and Iona (14).
  • The Red Foxes also received three Preseason All-MAAC selections: The trio of Mehalick, Sheehy, and Delaney Galvin.

LAST TIME VS COLGATE
  • Marist last took on Colgate all the way back in February of 2013, and suffered a 16-12 loss at Tenney Stadium.
  • Assistant Coach Tierney Larson, who was a junior at Marist, scored a career-high, at the time, five points on two goals and three assists. 
  • For the game, Marist outshot Colgate 30-27, though the Raiders put 22 of those 27 shots on goal versus 21 for the Red Foxes.
  • Colgate finished with a slight lead in ground balls and clears at, 17-16 and 16-12, respectively.
  • The Red Foxes are 0-6 against the Raiders in the history of the program, dating back to 2007
 
SCOUTING COLGATE
  • Colgate finished 8-10 overall and 5-4 in conference last season.
  • The Raiders didn't seem to have a strong home field advantage last season, going just 3-4 at home and 5-6 on the road. 
  • Colgate defeated Boston University in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament, but fell to nationally ranked Loyola Maryland in the next round. 
  • The Raider's leading goal scorer, Noelle Patterson, returns for her senior season after scoring 38 goals last season. 
  • However, the Raiders lost their leading point scorer to graduation after last season. Tara Atkinson is no longer with the team, after scoring a team-high 61 points on 27 goals and 34 assists. She also led the team in the assists category. 
 
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes continue their road trip to open the season, traveling to Army West Point for another matinee. Marist will take on the Cadets on Wednesday, February 12 at 3 p.m.
