HAMILTON, New York – Junior captain
Julia Gabay was victorious in the top flights across singles and doubles, but a short-handed Marist squad was unable to overcome Colgate in a 5-2 loss on Saturday evening in the Empire State.
The Red Foxes now sit at 2-3 in dual matches this year. The Raiders notch their first head-to-head victory of their campaign.
- The day opened up with senior Jada Tijani and sophomore Madison Price falling in the second doubles spot 6-1 to Madi Kiani and Lauren O'Brien.
- Marist rebounded, however, as Gabay teamed up with fellow captain Sam Galu for a 6-4 victory in No. 1 doubles over Rebecca Wolf and Jordan Williams.
- In the deciding match for the doubles point, senior Amy Galloway and junior Sophia Chavarria triumphed 6-4 over MacKenzie Deeter and Emily Untermeyer to capture the point.
- Gabay made quick work of Emme Levenson in the top flight, 6-2, 6-2.
- Colgate would go on to win the rest of the lineup in singles, though the Red Foxes competed with four set tiebreaks out of the five remaining matches.
- Price won the first set 6-3 over Deeter, but fell 3-6, 1-6 in the final two sets of the second singles.
- In the third position, after Wolf won the first set 7-5, Chavarria took the second 6-4. Wolf edged out the junior 7-5 in the third.
- The fourth flight saw Galu take the first set over O'Brien 6-3. A tightly-contested second set went to the Raider 7-6 (7-3), and O'Brien closed it out in the tiebreak, 6-2.
- After Galloway won the opening contest over Katerina Atallah 6-1, the latter won the next two decisions 7-5, 6-2 out of No. 5 singles.
- Tijani dropped the sixth position to Williams, 1-6, 4-6.
- "The women played with a great deal of heart and determination, considering we had four players in the singles rotation who were playing out of order due to illness and injury. Julia Gabay was magnificent in both first singles and doubles (with Sam Galu), and we had four matches that went to a third set. A tremendous effort given our manpower limitations." – Director of Tennis Gary Sussman
- The Red and White returns home to host Binghamton at the Cross Court Tennis Facility on Saturday, February 15 at 6:15 p.m.
