VALPARAISO, Indiana – The Marist football team defeated Valparaiso, 27-24 in overtime, in a Pioneer Football League game on Saturday afternoon.
After a field goal for Valparaiso on the first possession of overtime, the Red Foxes' first play of the extra period was a 25-yard touchdown pass from
Austin Day to
Max Mazzella on a jump ball. For the red-shirt sophomore tight end Mazzella, it was his first career reception.
- On its first drive, Marist took the lead on a 19-yard rushing touchdown by Hunter Cobb.
- Valparaiso tied the game on a one-yard rushing touchdown by Robert Washington with 7:33 left in the first quarter.
- Cobb's 45-yard rushing touchdown gave the Red Foxes a 13-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter.
- With the Beacons driving late in the first half, Clayborne Fields III intercepted a pass at the Marist 3. This enabled the Red Foxes to preserve their 13-7 lead going to the locker room.
- Arthur Pinckney stopped Washington on a fourth-and-two play near midfield late in the third quarter. Three plays later, Austin Day hit Brett Landis for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Marist then converted a two-point conversion on a pass from Christopher Watkins to Wyatt McMahon with 3:06 left in the third quarter, and took a 21-7 lead.
- After a blocked punt deep in Marist territory, Washington's second touchdown of the day – this one from one yard away – cut the Red Foxes' lead to 21-14 with 13:48 left in the fourth quarter.
- Valparaiso tied the game at 21 thanks to Nick Orakoya's one-yard touchdown run with 9:56 to go. Neither team scored the remainder of regulation, and the game went to overtime.
- Valparaiso had the first possession of overtime, and Brian Bartholomew's 25-yard field goal gave the Beacons a 24-21 lead. The Day-to-Mazzella touchdown came on the very next snap.
- Cobb finished with 141 yards on 18 carries and his two scores.
- Day finished 10-for-19 for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
- Teddy Wright finished with a team-high 11 tackles, eight of which were solo. He had a sack, an interception, and one-and-a-half tackles for loss.
- Jayden Johnson added 10 stops. Jacob Abill also had one-and-a-half tackles for loss.
- Marist had zero turnovers, while Valparaiso had two.
- Valparaiso had a 351-349 edge in total yards.
- This was Marist's first overtime victory since Oct. 20, 2018 against Davidson, and first on the road since Oct. 15, 2016 at Morehead State.
- Marist is now 9-1 all-time against Valparaiso.
- Fields intercepted a pass for the second straight week. He had his first career interception last week.
- Landis' touchdown was the first of his career.
- Wright's interception with the first of his career.
- Marist is now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
- Valparaiso is now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the PFL.
- Marist will return home to face Stetson on Saturday, Oct. 9.
- It is the Red Foxes' first PFL home game of the season, and will kick off at noon.
