POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's soccer team defeated Niagara in double overtime, 3-2, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Tenney Stadium on Wednesday.
Huib Achterkamp's penalty kick in the 102
nd minute was the golden goal. Achterkamp is now 7-for-7 on penalty kicks in his career, including 2-for-2 this season.
- Henrique Cruz's blast from over 30 yards out got the Red Foxes on the scoreboard first in the 14th minutes.
- Stefan Copetti's ninth goal of the year, set up by Joe Mac, put Marist up 2-0 in the 31st minute. The Red Foxes led 2-0 after the first 45 minutes.
- Jelldrik Dallmann scored twice for Niagara in less than 18 minutes to tie the match at two. His second goal came on a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Dallman's first goal snapped a Marist and keeper Samuel Ilin scoreless streak at 391 minutes, 11 seconds.
- Achterkamp's PK early in the second overtime won the match for Marist.
- Marist had a 17-12 edge in total shots, and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
- Each team had three corner kicks.
- Copetti and Cruz each had five shots, and Copetti landed two on goal.
- Marist is now 9-6-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes are riding a five-match unbeaten streak (4-0-1).
- With three more points in the standings, Marist sits alone at the top of the MAAC table with 19 points, three clear of second-place Rider, and four ahead of third-place Monmouth.
- Niagara is 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC.
- Marist has a bye from conference play on Saturday.
- The Red Foxes close out the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at Fairfield at 7 p.m.
