Women’s Soccer Falls On Senior Night

All 10 Seniors Appear In The Starting Lineup

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - On a night filled with emotion as the Marist women's soccer team celebrated their 10 seniors, the Red Foxes dropped a 1-0 contest to MAAC-rival Siena on Saturday night at Tenney Stadium.
 
The result brings the Red Foxes to 3-2-1 in the conference and 4-4-2 overall. The Saints extend their win streak to three games, and improve to 4-1 in the conference and 6-6-1 on the year.
 
Marist provided pressure, racking up 15 shots including some opportunities late, but Siena goalkeeper Brooke Boermeester made six stops to keep the Red Foxes off the board.
 
In the 82nd minute, the Saints got a corner kick which was taken by Katrina Kurtz, who crossed the ball into the box right to the head of Ashleigh Sarafin, who was able to finish it off and secure the win.
 
Senior goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner totaled seven saves on the night for the Red Foxes.
 
first half
  • Marist's first shot of the game came from sophomore midfielder Amanda Caldarelli, who put it just wide of the net.
  • The Saints put their first shot on target in the 20th minute as Emily McNelis fired a shot from outside the box that was easily scooped up by Kelchner.
  • In the 28th minute, Brianna Montinard whipped a shot that Kelchner collected.
  • Jayanna Monds ripped a deep shot that forced Kelchner to make a diving save in the 33rd minute.
  • Senior defender Riley Abate made a run up from defense and fired a shot that was easily grabbed by Boermeester in the 36th minute.
  • In the 40th minute, Marist earned a direct kick just outside the box, and freshman midfielder Christina Layden sent it over the net.
 
second half
  • In the 50th minute, Amanda Caldarelli fired a shot on target that was saved by Boermeester.
  • Siena came right back and strung some passes together, leading to a shot by Carrie Krohn, but Kelchner was there to make a kick save.
  • In the 60th minute, the Saints had a corner kick that led to a McNelis header, but once again, Kelchner came through with the stop.
  • In the 75th minute, freshman midfielder Autumn Smith sent in a cross to senior forward Victoria Colatosti, who was able to get a shot on target that was denied by Boermeester.
  • After Sarafin's strike, the Red Foxes nearly got the equalizer in the 83rd minute, as senior midfielder Abby Murphy crossed it to junior forward Brooke Cergol, who redirected it towards the net, but Boermeester was there for the save.
  • Two minutes later, sophomore forward Bridget Dudziec crossed it into senior forward Kaylin Sperley, but another save was made by Boermeester.

  • Siena had the advantage in shots (21-15) and shots on target (8-6).
  • Corners also favored the Saints 6-1.
  • Abate and Caldarelli paced the Red Foxes with four and three shots respectively.
  • Marist spent 59 percent of its possession in the attacking zone. For the game, Siena garnered 52 percent of possession.
  • Kelchner, Abate, and graduate defender Deanna Lomino played the full 90 minutes.

  • Marist deployed a 10-senior starting XI for the game. Seniors Brinley Chabot, Haley Guertin, Taylor Hennig, and Kayla Afflitto made their first-career starts. Chabot and Afflitto appeared for the first time this season.
  • In total, Kelchner, Murphy, Chabot, Guertin, Colatosti, Sperley, Hennig, Di Palma, Abate, and Afflitto were recognized with their Senior Day ceremony before the game. This senior class has amassed 27 victories in about three full seasons, going 15-8-3 in MAAC play to this point.
  • The Red Foxes sustain their first home loss of 2021. Their last regular season home setback came on October 5th, 2019.
  • Siena snaps a two-game regular season slide against Marist, winning its first game on the road in the rivalry since 2016.
