Champions! Men's Soccer Wins MAAC Title

Red Foxes Win Fourth MAAC Championship in Program HIstory

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The #1 seed Marist Red Foxes won the MAAC championship on Sunday. After a 2-2 tie with Rider through two overtimes totaling 110 minutes, the Red Foxes defeated fifth-seeded Rider by a 5-3 margin on penalty kicks.

The Red Foxes won their fourth MAAC championship in school history, and first since 2005.

First Half
  • Marist's Justin Scharf nails the first goal of the game and his first of the season in the 18th minute of play, sneaking it into the top left corner. 

  • Kyle Galloway of the Red Foxes nailed a free kick goal in the top left corner in the 22nd minute. This was the second shot of the game and Marist was 2 for 2 on shots.  

  • Justin Jaime had a perfect chance for a goal, but his shot was saved by Rider's Pablo Gatinois in the 25th minute.  

  • Tyrrell Moore of the Broncs netted the first goal for Rider in the 28th minute off an errant pass by goalkeeper Samuel Ilin. This was the first goal scored against Marist in the post-season and was the only shot on net in the first half for Rider. 

  • Adel Al-Masude of the Broncs got a free kick chance in the 36th minute but his shot hit the post. 

  • Antek Sienkiel had a great chance to net another for Marist but sent his shot over the crossbar in the 40th minute.  

  • Guillaume Sarrabayrouse took a chance in the 41st minute for Rider but missed wide left. In the 43rd minute Zaki Alibou of the Broncs sent a shot above the crossbar, giving Marist a goal kick.  

  • Francisco Gomez Olano had his shot blocked in the 44th minute by a Marist defender.  

Second Half
  • Rider got it going early in the 48th minute as Marist netted an own goal, tying the game 2-2.   

  • Stefan Copetti had a great chance to score in the 57th minute but sent it over the net. 

  • In the 68th minute, Henrique Cruz missed a free kick wide right. 

  • Liam Salmon fired a line drive to Rider's goalkeeper in the 77th minute, marking the 5th shot on goal for the Red Foxes. 

  • In the 82nd minute Joe Mac of the Red Foxes fired a shot right to Gatinois. 

  • Copetti launched a shot to the bottom left in the 83rd minute but couldn't capitalize, missing just left of the net. 

  • Galloway had his free kick blocked in the 88th minute of play. And Rider's Tyrrell Moore fired a shot wide right in the 88th as well. 

First Overtime
  • A corner kick in the 94th minute came up short for the Red Foxes. 

  • A potential game winning goal by Huib Achterkamp in the 98th minute was fired over the net. 

Second Overtime
  • Stefan Copetti fires a shot and is blocked by Gatinois in the 101st minute. 

  • Kyle Galloway got his potential game winning header saved in the 103rd minute.  

  • Rider's corner kick was punched out by Illin in the 105th minute. 

  • A shot by Marist's Bernardo Gracindo was missed wide right in the 108th minute.

  • The Red Foxes are the first #1 seed to win MAAC Championship since Fairfield in 2017.  

  • Marist previously won MAAC championships in 2000, 2004, and 2005. This was the Red Foxes' first MAAC finals appearance since 2005.

  • Marist will play in the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes will learn their first-round opponent and site on Monday at 1 p.m. A selection show gathering will be held at the Cabaret on campus.
