Marist Football Shuts Out Drake

Red Foxes Hold Opponent Scoreless for First Time Since 2013

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team shut out Drake, 7-0, in a Pioneer Football League game at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.
 
Summary
  • In the first quarter, Marist's Clayborne Fields III intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards to the Drake 37. The Red Foxes went three-and-out on their ensuing series, but Dominic Donohue's punt was downed at the Drake 2.
  • Marist drove inside the Drake 10 on its next drive, but came away with no points after a missed field goal.
  • Drake had a second-and-four at the Marist 19 on its next drive, but Jacob Abill and Mike Arrington combined for a two-yard tackle for loss. On third down, Arrington had a stop one yard short of the marker, and the Bulldogs missed a field goal.
  • The game remained scoreless until late in the third quarter. The Red Foxes started a drive at their own with 3:27 to play. Austin Day started with completions to Sydney Person for 18 yards and Will Downes for 35. After two runs by Hunter Cobb gained seven, Marist had a third-and-three from the Drake 10. Day found Cobb in the flat, and he took it into the end zone to break the scoreless tie with 50 seconds left in the period.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, Drake had third-and seven from the Marist 22. A sack by Teddy Wright resulted in a 10-yard loss. On fourth down, Nick Foglia was credited with a blocked field goal.
  • Drake started its final drive at its 20 with 2:29 remaining. The Bulldogs reached their own 42, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete. The Red Foxes then ran out the clock.
 
Stats
  • Fields and Jayden Johnson led Marist with nine tackles apiece.
  • Jacob Abill had a game-high one-and-a-half tackles for loss among his six stops.
  • Downes had a team-high 47 receiving yards on four receptions, which tied Antoine Morales for the team high.
  • Day finished 21-for-28 for 186 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He completed his final eight passes, and did not throw an incompletion in the final 24 minutes of the game.
  • For Drake, Colin Howard caught three passes for 60 yards. His 43-yard reception was the Bulldogs' longest play of the day.
  • Marist outgained Drake 256-248, and held a 32:31-27:29 edge in time of possession.
 
Notes
  • This was Marist's first shutout since a 27-0 triumph over Stetson on Oct. 27, 2013.
  • This is the first time Marist has held two opponents out of the end zone in the same season since 2013. The Red Foxes held Stetson to three points on Oct. 9.
  • This is the first time Marist has defeated Drake in nine tries.
  • Four of the last six Drake-Marist games have been decided by seven points or less.
  • This was Marist's lowest scoring game since Nov. 5, 1988, when the Red Foxes fell to St. John Fisher, 3-0.
 
Records
  • Marist is now 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the PFL. The Red Foxes have clinched at least a .500 PFL finish for their third straight season, and seventh time in the last eight seasons.
  • Drake is now 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the PFL.

  • Marist plays its final PFL road game of the season at Presbyterian on Saturday, Nov. 13.
  • It will be the first meeting between the teams in program history.
