Water Polo Wins Three MAAC Games On Saturday

Marist Defeats Iona, VMI Twice Within 10-Hour Span

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Playing three matches within 10 hours and five in a four-day span, Marist Water Polo won every game on the regular season's penultimate day, dispatching Iona and taking two from VMI.
 
The Red Foxes enter their final regular season game with a 5-2 record, moving into first place in the Red Division of the 2021 MAAC standings. Marist has not lost a game it has competed in as of writing.
 
game one

Marist 14, Iona 9
  • The Red Foxes roared out to a 5-0 lead in the first period thanks to five different goal scorers: India Alter (power play), Shinae Carrington, Lauren Smith, Katie Gill (penalty shot), and Mackenzie Greco.
  • Iona didn't tally their first goal until the 5:23 mark in the second frame.
  • Viktoria Orlova notched two scores in the stanza, guiding Marist to a 7-3 lead at half.
  • The Red Foxes had their largest advantage at 10-3 following strikes from Carrington, Myriam Lizotte, and Kaylee Brard midway through the third.
  • Over the next 10 minutes, however, the Gaels rocketed off five consecutive goals to close within 10-8 in the fourth.
  • Brard broke the streak with 5:20 to play, while Carrington added two goals and Orlova one to seal the victory.
  • Carrington led all scorers with four goals, while Orlova added three.
  • Marina Hyham made eight saves in goal.
 
game two

Marist 15, VMI 7
  • The Keydets struck first, but Marist responded with four straight goals, which included two power play tallies from Orlova.
  • Orlova completed the hat trick 3:18 into the second period, then Smith found the back of the net twice within 63 seconds to stake the Red Foxes to a 7-2 edge.
  • In the final 2:02 before halftime, Marist rattled off three straight goals for a 10-3 lead into the break.
  • Though the Red Foxes only scored once in the third stanza (Lizotte at the 6:46 mark), their defense shut out VMI.
  • Sayer Alter converted on a penalty shot to open the fourth. Kathryn McCullough, India Alter, and Orlova rounded out the scoring in the period.
  • The Keydet's Zoe Salafatinos recorded a hat trick in the final 1:37 of the game, but VMI ran out of time for a comeback.
  • Orlova finished the game with four goals, while Smith and India Alter also scored twice.
  • Hyham and Emily Hilliard combined for 15 saves in net.
 
game three

Marist 15, VMI 9
  • Each side traded goals in the first 6:33, as Sawyer Alter, Carrington, and Castro dented the twine.
  • With the score knotted at four, Orlova whipped a shot past VMI keeper Katie Lloyd with one second on the clock to put Marist ahead 5-4 after one.
  • The Keydets tied the score again, this time at 6, midway through the second. However, India Alter lit the lamp and McCullough drilled a penalty shot to make it 8-6 Red Foxes at halftime.
  • VMI's Ahumada broke the ice in the third period to whittle Marist's lead to 8-7, but Burnworth scored with 50 seconds left, and Sawyer Alter potted another goal with one second on the timer for a 10-7 lead.
  • Lizotte scored 51 seconds into the fourth quarter for Marist's largest advantage at the time, 11-7.
  • Imset returned the favor with 5:23 to play, but the Red Foxes rattled off four straight goals in just 2:20 to pull away. Orlova scored a pair, while Lizotte and Gabi Gervasi added tallies.
  • Orlova once again led the squad with a hat trick. India Alter and Lizotte had two scores as well.
  • In goal, Hyham and Hilliard teamed up for 12 stops, including eight in the second half.
