Water Polo Begins MAAC Championship on Saturday

Red Foxes will Take on La Salle at 1 p.m. in Opening Round at McCann

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist opens play in the 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Water Polo Championships on Saturday afternoon. The second-seeded Red Foxes will take on the third-seeded La Salle Explorers at McCann Natatorium at 1 p.m.
 
The top two teams in both the Red and White division made up this year's MAAC Championship field. #1 LIU was scheduled to take on #4 VMI, however LIU will be unable to compete in this year's tournament.Therefore, VMI will advance to the finals and take on the winner of Marist/La Salle on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
A closer look at this year's MAAC Championships:
 
 
CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • This is the 17th consecutive MAAC Championship appearance for the Red Foxes.
  • Marist will be seeking its seventh consecutive MAAC Chapionship game appearance this weekend. 
  • The team has been defeated by Wagner in three consecutive MAAC Championship games, but Wagner is not in this year's tournament. 
  • The Red Foxes last won the MAAC Championship in 2010, and previously won in 2009, 2008, and 2006. 
 
HISTORY
  • Marist is 6-0 all-time against La Salle. They did not play each other this season due to travel restrictions. 
  • The Red Foxes and Explorers have never met in the poseason. 
  • Marist owns an 18-1 record against VMI all-time. 
  • The Red Foxes defeated VMI twice last weekend, by scores of 15-9 and 15-7. 
  • VMI and Marist last squared off in the post season in 2017, and the Red Foxes came out victorious by a score of 11-7.

  • The MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Marina Hyham has a 6-0 record and 39 saves and just a 7.05 GAA this season. 
  • Shinae Carrington (All-MAAC First Team) is tied for the team lead in points with 17.
  • Viktoria Orlova (All-MAAC Second Team) leads the team in goals this year with 15.
  • Myriam Lizotte (All-MAAC First Team) leads the team with five steals and has 10 goals. 
  • Justine Castro (All-MAAC Second Team) has five goals and an assist in 2021.
