Men’s Soccer Drops Overtime Match At UAlbany

McDermott Makes Four Saves In First-Career Start

ALBANY, New York – Junior goalkeeper Dylan McDermott made four saves in his first collegiate start, but UAlbany outlasted Marist with a goal in overtime to secure a 1-0 decision on Tuesday evening at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.

The loss drops the Red Foxes to 2-2, while the Great Danes boost their record to 3-1.

Marist was not without its chances late, firing off five shots in the final 13 minutes of the game. However, in the 99th minute, McDermott redirected an Austin DaSilva shot that went right to Hafliði Sigurðarson on the right side, and the Great Dane buried the rebound to seal the win for UAlbany.

Junior forward Stefan Copetti and junior midfielder Henrique Cruz led the Red Foxes with three shots each. Classmate Antek Sienkiel had two shots in the game as well.

DaSilva paced the Great Danes with three shots. In goal, Carlos Tofern collected two saves.

first half
  • McDermott's first save came in the eighth minute, denying Saad Faiz near the right sideline.
  • In the 15th minute, junior midfielder Joe Mac placed a corner kick int the box that pinballed for a moment, but UAlbany cleared it away.
  • After graduate captain Huib Achterkamp had a shot blocked, fellow captain Justin Scharf crossed a ball in for Copetti, but his header sailed wide right in the 25th minute.
  • With less than four minutes until halftime, junior defender Bernardo Gracindo got open near the left corner and blasted a 20-yard kick that lifted above the upper-right corner.
  • In the final minute of the frame, freshman forward Richard Morel booted a corner kick over the crossbar from inside the box.

second half
  • Five minutes out of the break, Marist earned a free kick that stayed around UAlbany's end, but Gracindo put too much on a cross that went out of bounds.
  • In the 73rd minute, UAlbany generated a Red Fox turnover at midfield that turned into a break for Andrew Weiner, but McDermott dove to his right to deny the Great Dane, keeping it scoreless.
  • Copetti broke loose moments later and made a move to his left, resulting in an open shot towards the top-right corner of the box that Tofern had to smother with his body.
  • In the 80th minute, Mac had another sharp cross that almost met Copetti's header attempt, but the pair couldn't connect as the pass trickled past the end line.
  • Mac inserted a corner kick that met Cruz with four minutes until the horn, but Tofern denied the Red Fox inside the 18.
  • A minute later, Copetti blasted a long-range shot from the middle, but it was deflected over the woodwork.
  • UAlbany almost won it with about 30 seconds remaining thanks to Neophytos Scottis' direct kick, but McDermott got enough of a hand for it to ricochet off the crossbar.

overtime
  • Two-and-a-half minutes into the stanza, Cruz found a rebound and attempted to launch a shot from the top of the box, but a UAlbany defender blocked it before it got close.
  • Scharf had a similar result, this one off a corner kick, in the 95th minute, but his attempt was denied before it found its way to the keeper.
  • In the 96th minute, Scharf dribbled into the box and was tripped up, but the officials placed the free kick just outside the box. Cruz took the kick, and it was deflected by the UAlbany wall for a corner kick, but Marist couldn't capitalize.

quote from coach

"I thought we did some good things tonight, and the guys certainly deserved a better result. The lesson tonight is to not allow the game to be decided by anyone other than yourselves. We can give a little more, and I am confident we will respond." – Head Coach Matt Viggiano
