Men’s Basketball Wins Third Straight

Ituka, Wright, Jones Combine for 57 Points in Victory Over Niagara

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team earned its third straight win with a 77-70 triumph over Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Monday night at McCann Arena.
 
Summary
  • Neither team led by more than three in the first 11 minutes, but a 9-0 run staked Marist to a 22-15 lead at the 8:03 mark. Raheim Sullivan's three-pointer at the 10:05 mark gave Marist the lead for the remainder of the game, and Braden Bell added four consecutive points in the run.
  • Jao Ituka hit three free throws in the final minute of the half, as Marist took its largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 12. The Red Foxes took a 33-21 lead to the locker room.
  • An 8-0 run early in the second half extended Marist's lead to a game high of 18, and forced a Niagara timeout at the 17:17 mark.
  • Marist's lead again reached 18 on a thunderous dunk by Samkelo Cele with 8:51 to play, but Niagara cut its deficit in half with a 9-0 run. That run began a stretch where Niagara outscored Marist 27-11 over a span of 6:44. A pair of free throws by Marcus Hammond cut Marist's lead to 67-65 with 1:54 to go.
  • Marist closed the game by outscoring Niagara 10-5 over the final 1:32. The Red Foxes went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in this span, with four free throws from Ricardo Wright and two by Ituka.

  • Ituka led Marist with 20 points and four assists.
  • Wright finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
  • Jordan Jones had 18 points and team highs of seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Jones shot 9-for-11 from the field.
  • Marist shot .491 (28-for-57) from the field, .429 (6-for-14) from three-point range, and .833 (15-for-18) from the free-throw line while committed just seven turnovers.
  • Hammond led all scorers with 21 and added six rebounds. He was held to 7-for-22 shooting from the field, and went 6-for-6 from the line.

  • This is Marist's first three-game winning streak of the season.
  • Ituka has now scored at least 20 points seven times this season, including each of his last three games. His four assists set a career high.
  • In his seven career games against Niagara, Jones is now averaging 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks while shooting .738 from the field.
  • Since the start of the 2010-11 season, Marist and Niagara have now played 26 times, with each side winning 13. The total points scored in these games is 1,852 for Niagara, and 1,850 for Marist.
