Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to #9 Rutgers

Red Foxes Fought to The Finish, but Come up Short Against the Scarlet Knights

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey - The Marist men's lacrosse team fell in a hard-fought battle with #9 Rutgers Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Scarlet Knights improve to 2-0 on the season while the Red Foxes are now 0-1.
 
Summary
  • James Lyons opened the scoring of the contest at 10:20 of the first quarter.
  • Rutgers responded with three straight goals to pull ahead in the middle of the first.
  • After a goal by Jamison Embury with :16 seconds left in the first quarter, Marist then knotted the score at 3-3 off a goal from Vito Musso assisted by Embury.
  • As part of a 4-1 goal scoring run, Rutgers regained the lead on a man-up opportunity with 9:04 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Scarlet Knights eventually pulled ahead 7-4 before another late quarter goal from Jamison Embury cut the Marist deficit to just two, 7-5 at the half.
  • Rutgers held Marist to a scoreless third quarter, adding three more goals to their lead. Leading the Red Foxes 10-5, it was their largest margin of the game.
  • Two straight fourth quarter goals by Musso cut the Scarlet Knights' lead back down to three goals.
  • A goal with 3:23 remaining by Kellen Pulera pulled the deficit back to two but that was as close as Marist would get as Rutgers would add one more before games end to hold on for the 13-10 win.

  • Musso led the team with four points on four goals.
  • Embury, James Lyons, and Pulera had two goals each. Embury finished with three points (two goals, one assist).
  • Anthony Novellano stopped a total 21 shots, ending the game with a .618 save percentage.
  • Rutgers had the advantage on face-offs, winning 20-of-27. And had a 48-to-28 advantage in groundballs.
  • The Scarlet Knights was led by Mitch Bartolo and Ross Scott scoring three goals each.
