Softball Swept at Niagara

Red Foxes Outhit Purple Eagles 16-5 On the Day But Fall Twice

NIAGARA FALLS, New York – The Marist softball team was swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Niagara on Saturday. The Red Foxes dropped game one by a score of 4-3, and the Purple Eagles won the second game, 5-3.
 
Marist is now 12-18 overall and 0-2 in MAAC play.
 
Game One
  • Niagara struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first.
  • The Red Foxes got one back in the second. Miah McDonald drew a leadoff walk, and scored on an error. Maddie Gore was credited with an RBI on the play.
  • Riley Crum's homer in the bottom of the third put Niagara up 4-1.
  • Meghan Davis homered to lead off the top of the fourth, which made the score 4-2.
  • Shea Walsh's single in the top of the seventh brought home Hailee Jantorno, and cut Marist's deficit to one. The Red Foxes loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to score the tying run.
  • Marist outhit Niagara, 7-2. Walsh, McDonald, and Davis all finished with two hits apiece.
  • Calista Phippen struck out five in 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Crum homered and had two RBIs, and also struck out five in four innings to earn the win. Julia Thompson got the final three outs for the save.
 
Game Two
  • In the top of the first, Sam Freeland reached on a one-out infield single, and scored on a base hit by McDonald.
  • Gore drew a leadoff walk in the second, and scored on a single by Caroline Baratta.
  • Walsh's leadoff home in the fourth staked Marist to a 3-0 lead.
  • Niagara scored all five of its runs in the fifth. With two outs, Samantha Hare's two-run single gave the Purple Eagles the lead.
  • Marist outhit Niagara, 9-3. Freeland and Baratta each went 2-for-4.
  • Cara Leone earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Thompson pitched the seventh as she saved both games.
 
Up Next
  • Marist will play a doubleheader at Canisius on Sunday.
  • First pitch of game one is set for noon.
  • The games will be carried on ESPN3.
