Softball Notches Sweep of Canisius

Freeland Collects Five Hits, Red Foxes Allow Just One Run in Two Games

BUFFALO, New York – The Marist softball team swept Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex. The Red Foxes allowed just one run on the day, earning victories by scores of 3-1 in game one and 7-0 in game two.

Marist is now 14-18 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play.

Game One
  • Marist broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth. Hailee Jantorno reached on a one-out error, and advanced to second on a Shea Walsh walk. Sam Freeland's infield single then loaded the bases. Caroline Baratta then brought home Jantorno and Walsh with a single up the middle.
  • Erin Hufford led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple for Canisius, and scored two batters later on a groundout by Christie McGee-Ross.
  • Marist tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Jantorno drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a double by Walsh, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Freeland.
  • Kiley Myers tossed a three-hitter, needing just 81 pitches as she improved to 5-2. Myers struck out seven, walked just one, and retired the last six batters she faced. She struck out the side in the second.
  • Walsh and Freeland were both 2-for-3.

Game Two
  • The Red Foxes scored three in the top of the first. Walsh was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, and scored on a triple by Freeland. Miah McDonald's single brought home Freeland, and Alyssa Grupp's double brought home McDonald.
  • McDonald led off the third with a walk, and scored three batters later on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Gianelle.
  • Canisius loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third, but Calista Phippen came on in relief to record an inning-ending strikeout.
  • After Jantorno doubled and Freeland singled, Baratta's three-run homer gave Marist a 7-0 advantage in the fourth.
  • Phippen retired the last 10 Golden Griffins she faced. The only Canisius batter to reach against her was on an error. She struck out four in 4.1 as she improved to 2-0.
  • Marist outhit Canisius, 10-1. Freeland went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk, an RBI, and a triple as she went 5-for-6 on the day. McDonald and Grupp each had two hits, and McDonald scored twice.
