Marist Falls to Canisius at MAAC Softball Championship

Davis Has Three Hits, Red Foxes Outhit Golden Griffins 10-5

BUFFALO, New York – Fifth-seeded Marist was defeated by top-seeded Canisius 5-2 on Thursday at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Softball Championship.
 
Thursday was the Red Foxes' first loss in the double elimination format. To win the championship, Marist must win two games each of the next two days.
 
Summary
  • Canisius scored four in the bottom of the first. Destiny Falquez and Lindsi Dennis had RBI singles, and Sophia Recorsio drove in two with a two-out double.
  • Marist got one back in the top of the second. Alyssa Grupp belted a two-out triple, and Meghan Davis followed with an RBI single up the middle.
  • In the fourth, Davis' two-out double brought home pinch-runner Ronni Howard from first base, which cut Marist's deficit to 4-2.
  • Canisius went back up by three in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out error.
  • Marist had runners on second and third with two outs in both the fifth and seventh, but was unable to score.

  • Marist outhit Canisius, 10-5
  • Davis finished 3-for-3 with a double, and drove in both of Marist's runs.
  • Hailee Jantorno and Caroline Baratta each had two hits apiece.
  • Calista Phippen pitched a complete game for Marist. She gave up five hits and two walks, and allowed just one hit and one run after the first inning. Phippen threw 89 pitches, including just 56 over the final five innings.
