Marist Completes Regular-Season Sweep of Mount St. Mary's

Shazer Leads Way with 22 Points, 13 Rebounds

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's basketball Team won its second straight game, completing the regular-season sweep of Mount St. Mary's on Thursday night as they picked up their sixth MAAC victory by a final score of 65-54.

 
Summary
 
  • Marist got off to a good start in the first quarter, in large part thanks to Zaria Shazer who scored 8 of the Red Foxes 19 first quarter points.
  • In the second quarter the Red Foxes shot just 1-for-12 from the field. This resulted in Mount St. Mary's starting to come back into the game going on a 10-4 run, cutting the Marist lead to just one at 23-22.
  • However the Red Foxes would answer with a 9-0 run, which gave them a 31-24 lead at halftime.
  • After surrendering a 5-0 run to Mount St. Mary's to start the third quarter, Marist answered with an emphatic 15-0 run where the Red Foxes held Mount St. Mary's scoreless for 7:24.
  • Marist would end the third quarter up 50-34.
  • But in the fourth quarter, things started to change, as Mount St. Mary's starts the fourth with an 11-0 run, cutting the Marist lead to just five. 
  • However, Marist hung on thanks to some clutch free throw shooting from Kiara Fisher and Shazer. The duo combined to go 12-for-12 in the fourth quarter, with eight from Fisher and four from Shazer.

  • Shazer had a double double finishing with 22 points, 13 rebounds, along with going 10-for-11 from the free throw line. She added three steals and two blocked shots. Eight of her rebounds came on the offensive end.
  • Fisher scored 17 points, including a 12-for-12 performance from the line.
  • Marist went 28-for-33 from the free throw line (.848).
  • The Red Foxes scored 29 points off turnovers. 
 
Notes
  • Fisher's 12 free throws made without a miss are tied for the second-highest total in program history, trailing only her 16-for-16 performance at the Mount on Jan. 19. Rachele Fitz also went 12-for-12 against Utah on Nov. 22, 2007.
  • Fisher, who scored a program-record 44 against Mount St. Mary's in the first meeting, was 28-for-28 from the line against the Mount this season.
  • Fisher has now made 28 straight free throws.
  • Shazer had her third double-double of the season, all of which have come in her last eight games.
  • Marist shot exactly 28-for-33 from the line in both meetings against Mount St. Mary's. The totals of free throws made and attempted are both the highest for the Red Foxes this season.

  • Marist improves to 10-10 on the season and 6-5 in the MAAC.
  • Mount St. Mary's drops to 8-13 on the season and 4-8 in the MAAC.
