Fairfield, Connecticut - The Marist women's volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end Friday night, as Fairfield defended home court with a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-15, 25-19) at Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
Fairfield's balanced attack and strong blocking effort proved decisive, as the Stags hit .443 for the match while holding the Red Foxes to a .193 clip. The Stags also held a 9-2 edge in total team blocks.
Junior outside hitter Sara Dasic led Marist offensively with six kills and added three digs. Mallory Reck followed with five kills and three blocks, while Sarah Bumstead and Eleana Koute chipped in four kills apiece. Setter Caelyn Dumas dished out 17 assists and recorded a team-high nine digs, while libero Cecilia Potter-Pessoa collected seven digs.
Fairfield jumped out quickly, taking the opening set 25-14 behind a .500 hitting percentage. Marist responded with stronger play in the second, pulling within a point midway through, but the Stags closed on a 10-3 run. The Red Foxes kept fighting in the third, led by Dasic's steady hitting, before Fairfield sealed the sweep with a 25-19 decision.
With the result, Marist moves to 6-12 overall and 4-2 in MAAC play, while Fairfield remains unbeaten in conference action at 6-0 (12-4 overall).
The Red Foxes return to action Saturday, October 11, continuing their MAAC road trip against Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
