CLAREMONT, California- The Marist water polo team played two matches on the first day of the Convergence Tournament, Friday night. The Red Foxes swept the first day of competition and scored 30 goals in two matches.
The Red Foxes improved to 8-5 overall on the 2025 season.
Ella Baumgarten led the Red Foxes with five goals in a 15-10 win against CUI. In the second match of the evening,
Rachel Dean and
Victoria Padilla scored a hat trick apiece in a 15-11 win over Chapman.
- First Quarter:
- The Red Foxes scored three goals to begin the first quarter of play. Victoria Padilla, Ella Baumgarten, and Paige Naegle scored the goals for the Red Foxes, which made the match 3-0.
- CUI countered with three unanswered goals and tied the game at three apiece.
- With time expiring, Baumgarten scored a goal and gave the Red Foxes a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Second Quarter:
- Baumgarten scored a natural hat trick with two goals to begin the second quarter. With the two goals, the Red Foxes extended their lead 6-3 early in the quarter.
- CUI scored a goal, which cut into the Red Foxes lead 6-4 with six minutes remaining in the half.
- The Red Foxes added to their lead with three more goals, two from Lela McCarroll, which gave the Red Foxes a 9-4 lead.
- To end the half, CUI scored a pair of goals and cut into the Red Foxes lead 9-6 at halftime.
- Third Quarter:
- CUI began the third quarter with a third consecutive goal and made it a 9-7 match early in the quarter.
- The Red Foxes countered with two goals from Victoria Padilla, which extended their lead 11-7.
- The Red Foxes and CUI traded goals at the end of the quarter, as the Red Foxes took a 12-8 lead into the final frame.
- Fourth Quarter:
- Samantha Bentley extended the Red Foxes lead to begin the fourth quarter with a goal. The Red Foxes led 13-8 in the early minutes of the quarter.
- The Red Foxes and CUI would go back-and-forth the rest of the match, scoring two goals apiece.
- The Red Foxes won the first match against CUI 15-10.
- Ella Baumgarten led the Red Foxes with five goals in the win.
- Rachel Dean led the Red Foxes with four assists, finishing with five points.
- Victoria Padilla tallied a hat trick in the win.
- The Red Foxes accounted for eight saves as a team in the win.
- First Quarter:
- Chapman began the scoring with a goal and took a 1-0 lead early in the quarter.
- The Red Foxes countered with five unanswered goals in the quarter and took a 5-1 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Rachel Dean scored two goals for the Red Foxes in the five-goal run.
- Chapman finished the quarter outscoring the Red Foxes 2-1, as the Red Foxes took a 6-3 lead after the first quarter.
- Second Quarter:
- Chapman scored the quarter-opening goal and cut into the Red Foxes lead 6-4.
- The second quarter would consist of a back-and-forth contest, as the Red Foxes and Chapman scored four goals apiece.
- The Red Foxes took a 10-7 lead into halftime.
- Third Quarter:
- To open the quarter, Chapman scored a goal which cut the Red Foxes lead to 10-8.
- Victoria Padilla countered with the Red Foxes' first goal of the quarter and extended the lead to 11-8.
- Chapman would outscore the Red Foxes 3-1 for the rest of the third quarter, which gave the Red Foxes a 12-11 lead.
- Fourth Quarter:
- In the fourth quarter, the Red Foxes scored three goals and left Chapman scoreless in the frame.
- The Red Foxes swept the first day of Convergence, defeating Chapman 15-11.
- The Red Foxes play their final two matches of the Convergence Tournament.
