FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Marist University softball team completed a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series sweep at Sacred Heart on Saturday, as the Red Foxes earned a 4-3 victory in the series finale.
- Marist opened the scoring in the top of the first. Peyton Pusey led off the game with a double into the left-center gap, advanced to third on a long flyout by Miah McDonald, and scored on a double down the line by Haley Ahr.
- Sacred Heart tied the game with three consecutive hits to start the bottom of the second. However, Kiley Myers worked out of a second and third with no outs jam thanks to a great defensive play by McDonald at short followed by two strikeouts.
- Maddie Gore and Pusey scored on an error in the top of the third. Sacred Heart tied the game in the bottom half, but Maddie Pleasants came on in relief to escape a second and third with one out jam by recording back-to-back strikeouts.
- Marist re-claimed the lead in the top of the fifth when Sienna Kunze's single home brought McDonald. This proved to be the final run of the game.
- Sacred Heart had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but Pleasants recorded a strikeout to end the game.
- Marist finished with seven hits, led by Ahr and Pusey with two apiece.
- Pusey went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double.
- Pleasants tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief with six strikeouts. She allowed just two hits and one walk.
- Charlene Davis had three hits for Sacred Heart.
- Sam Kowalski pitched a complete game for the Pioneers with five strikeouts. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
- Marist is 34-7-1 overall and 11-2-1 in the MAAC.
- Sacred Heart is 18-22 overall and 8-9 in conference play.
- Marist will face Merrimack in a home doubleheader on Tuesday.
- First pitch of game one is set for noon.
