Marist Softball Powers Past Manhattan

McDonald Sets Single-Season Record For Homers; Rogers Belts Three

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist University softball team swept a doubleheader from Manhattan at Gartland Field on Friday, prevailing by scores of 12-4 in five innings and 14-7.
 
In game one, Miah McDonald set a program record for home runs in a season. Her 21st blast was also the 50th of her career, and it allowed her to set the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record with the 174th run scored of her career.


 
On the day, Marist blasted nine home runs. Samatha Rogers and Isabella Manory homered in each game, and Rogers finished with three blasts on the day.
 
Game One
  • Manhattan scored in top of the first, but Marist took the lead for good with four home runs in the bottom of the second. Rogers and Manory hit solo shots back-to-back. Later in the inning, McDonald's two-run homer was the record-setting one, and Haley Ahr followed with a homer of her own.
  • Manhattan scored three in the top of the third, but Marist got two in the bottom half. Ronni Howard's infield single scored Sienna Kunze, and Rogers came home on an error.
  • Marist then added five in the fourth to take an eight-run lead. Manory had a two-run double, followed by an RBI double from Howard. Manory scored on a wild pitch, and Ahr's RBI single brought home Howard.
  • Marist finished with 13 hits, led by Ahr and Howard with three apiece. Manory drove in three runs, while Rogers scored three.
  • Marist's 6-8 hitters (Rogers, Manory, Howard) went 7-for-7 with seven runs scored and six RBIs.
  • Anna Sidlowski (8-3) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
 
Game Two
  • Lindsey Hoag's three-run homer staked Manhattan to a 3-0 lead in the first, but Marist countered with one in the bottom half. McDonald belted a one-out triple, and she scored on a groundout by Ahr.
  • Marist tied the game in the second. Manory led off with a homer. Peyton Pusey drew a two-out walk and scored on a single by Ahr.
  • Marist took the lead for good with a five-run third. Rogers and Pusey each belted two-run homers, and Ahr brought home McDonald with a single.
  • Manhattan got within one after scoring two apiece in the fourth and fifth, but Marist scored three in the bottom of the fifth. Ahr led off the inning with a homer, and Rogers hit a two-run homer three batters later.
  • Marist then tacked on three more in the sixth. Ahr's single brought home Pusey, Maddie Pleasants' sacrifice fly scored McDonald, and Ahr later scored on an error.
  • Marist pounded out 17 hits. Ahr went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Pusey and Kunze had three hits apiece.
  • Rogers, who homered twice, finished with four RBIs.
  • The top three hitters in the lineup (Pusey, McDonald, Ahr) went a combined 9-for-12 with eight runs scored and five RBIs.
  • Maddie Pleasants (13-3) went the first four innings for the win, and Sidlowski went the last three for her first save of the season.
 
Notes
  • McDonald and Pusey each have scored 64 runs this season, which is the highest single-season total in program history.
  • Marist has scored 339 runs this season, which is a single-season program record.
  • The Red Foxes have won eight straight.
  • Marist finished with 30 hits on the day.
  • Marist officially clinched a berth in the MAAC Championships.



 
Records
  • Marist is 38-7-1 overall and 15-2-1 in the MAAC.
  • Manhattan is 10-29 overall and 7-13 in conference play.
