POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Marist grad midfielder
Joshua Balcarcel will have the opportunity to continue his playing career in the professional ranks after earning a training camp invitation from the California Redwoods of the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL). The Redwoods announced Thursday afternoon that Balcarcel was added to the team via a Special Training Camp Designee waiver claim.
The Redwoods and the rest of the PLL teams will hold their Training Camp beginning on May 24 in preparation for the 2025 Opening Weekend games on the campus of UAlbany from May 30 to the 31st.
A five-year member of the Marist program, Balcarcel, a two-year team captain and 2024 points leader, tallied 77 goals and 50 assists for 127 points across 68 contests.
As a junior, he tallied a hat-trick in the MAAC semifinal and championship to aid Marist in beating Siena to claim the title, en route to earning MAAC All-Championship Team honors.
As a senior, Balcarcel recorded team highs in goals (30) and assists (21) for 51 points, en route to earning All-MAAC First Team status. In his final season as a Red Fox, Balcarcel totaled 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points, aiding Marist to a berth in the MAAC Semifinals.
If he makes the Redwoods' roster, Balcarcel will be the first Red Fox to play professionally since Peyton Smith, who was drafted 6th overall by the Redwoods in 2020.
