POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's soccer team came up just short in a back-and-forth contest on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 to NJIT at Tenney Stadium.
The first half saw plenty of action, with all four opening goals scored before the break. NJIT (2-1-0) got on the board in the 16th minute when Merle Hueser finished off a cross from Sofia Mignon and Emily Jozak. Marist (0-3-0) answered less than eight minutes later, as senior midfielder
Olivia Lindsay buried a shot from close range off a feed from
Jiji Sweiss to even the score at 1-1.
Â
The Highlanders quickly regained the lead in the 33rd minute on a goal from Briana Andreoli, but the Red Foxes struck back again before halftime. In the 43rd minute, freshman
Isabella Seibert netted her first career goal, slotting home a pass from
Sophia DeJoia to make it 2-2 at intermission.
Â
NJIT reclaimed the lead for good in the 56th minute when Jozak scored what proved to be the game-winner off a cross from Kennedy Westbrook.
Marist controlled much of the possession in the second half, outshooting NJIT 12-4 for the match and earning six corner kicks, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Ella Bryan led the attack with a team-high five shots, while Lindsay and Seibert each scored their first goals of the season.
Goalkeeper
Maddy Catalanotti played all 90 minutes in net for the Red Foxes.
Marist will return to action on Thursday, Aug. 28, when it plays host to Binghamton. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on ESPN+ from Tenney Stadium

I thought we did a really great job of getting back into the game after being down 1-0, then 2-1. I thought it showed a lot of growth in our mentality and mindset that we can score goals, which is huge from our experience standpoint to go forward and know that we can put the ball in the back of net. We did the work offensively, we got to do the work to keep moving forward in the second half and to pit the game away.
