NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A strong individual performance from
Sean Mullan and timely extra-man execution kept things competitive early, but a decisive third-quarter surge by Yale proved to be the difference as Marist dropped a 15-9 decision Tuesday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Marist (0-2) was led by Mullan, who poured in five goals and added an assist in a six-point effort.
Drew Anderson added two goals and an assist, while
Collin Patrick and
Steven Cain each found the back of the net.
The Red Foxes showed early composure against the Bulldogs. After surrendering the game's opening goal, Marist responded with back-to-back unassisted tallies from Mullan to take a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Yale answered late in the period to carry a 3-2 edge into the second
The Bulldogs created separation in the second quarter, scoring four times in a three-minute span to stretch the lead to 7-2. Marist responded on the man-up, as Mullan finished off a feed from Anderson before Patrick converted another extra-man opportunity off a Mullan assist. The Red Foxes went 3-for-4 on extra-man chances in the contest, capitalizing on Yale penalties to stay within striking distance.
Out of the halftime break, Marist made its push. Mullan struck again early in the third, and Anderson followed with an unassisted goal to trim the deficit to 7-6 with 12:38 remaining in the quarter.
That would be as close as the Red Foxes would get.
Yale responded with a decisive run, scoring seven of the final eight goals in the third quarter to build a commanding 14-6 advantage heading into the fourth.
Marist continued to battle in the final quarter. Cain opened the scoring in the fourth, and Mullan added his fifth goal of the day on another extra-man opportunity. Anderson capped the Red Foxes' scoring with his second goal late in the contest.Â
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to take on Binghamton. Opening faceoff is set for noon.
