NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Marist men's lacrosse team earned a dramatic road victory on Saturday, defeating Merrimack 10–9 in overtime at Duane Stadium. The Red Foxes improved to 5-2 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0 with the win.
Steven Cain delivered the game-winning goal with 1:58 remaining in overtime, finishing a pass from
Collin Patrick to seal the victory for Marist after Merrimack had forced extra time in the closing seconds of regulation.
Marist controlled much of the early action, using a balanced offensive effort to build a multi-goal lead.
Drew Anderson opened the scoring for the Red Foxes in the first quarter, while
Jayce Konowitz added another to keep the game tied at 2–2 after the opening frame.
The Red Foxes seized momentum in the second quarter with a three-goal run.
Brady Dolan struck twice in the period, both assisted by
Peter Murray, while Murray added a goal of his own off a feed from Patrick to give Marist a 5–2 advantage at halftime.
Marist continued to push the pace in the third quarter. Anderson scored his second of the game, and Cain and
Simon Bowen each found the back of the net to stretch the Red Foxes' lead to 8–3 late in the period.
Merrimack responded with a strong fourth quarter, scoring five goals to rally back into the contest. The Warriors tied the game at 9–9 with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation, forcing overtime and setting up a tense finish.
After Merrimack won the opening overtime faceoff, Marist regained possession and worked the ball around before Patrick found Cain cutting into space for the decisive goal.
Cain finished with two goals including the game-winner, while Anderson and Dolan also scored twice each. Patrick led the team with three points on a goal and two assists, and Murray added three points with one goal and two assists.
At the faceoff X, Josh Smith helped control possession for the Red Foxes, winning 14 of 23 draws and collecting a team-high eight ground balls. In goal, Richie Metzger recorded nine saves to earn the win.
Marist outshot Merrimack 49–49 and held advantages in ground balls (22–17) and faceoffs (14–9) in the tightly contested matchup.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, March 21, when they play host to Iona at 7 PM on ESPN+.
