POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth battle that featured multiple momentum swings and extended into double overtime, Marist men's lacrosse fell to Siena, 11-10, Wednesday evening at Tenney Stadium.
The Red Foxes (5-3, 3-1 MAAC) erased a multi-goal deficit with a dominant third quarter and carried a late lead into the final seconds of the frame, but Siena (7-2, 3-0 MAAC) responded with a dramatic equalizer and eventually netted the game-winner in the second overtime period.
Marist was led offensively by
Sean Mullan, who recorded a hat trick and added an assist.
Collin Patrick matched that four-point output with two goals and two assists, while
Steven Cain and
Jayce Konowitz each added two goals.
After a tightly contested opening quarter ended tied at 3-3, Siena surged ahead in the second, building a 7-5 advantage heading into halftime.
The Red Foxes responded with their strongest stretch of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Saints 5-2. Goals from Cain, Konowitz, Mullan, and back-to-back finishes from Patrick flipped the game, giving Marist a 10-8 lead late in the period.
Siena, however, answered in the closing seconds of the third to cut the deficit to one, and eventually tied the game at 10-10 with 3:00 remaining in regulation.
Both teams had chances in the fourth quarter and first overtime, but strong defensive stands and key saves on both ends forced a second extra session. Marist goalkeeper
Richie Metzger made 11 saves in the contest, including several critical stops late to keep the Red Foxes in position.
In double overtime, Siena capitalized on its opportunity, scoring the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining to secure the 11-10 decision.
Marist held advantages in ground balls (37-34) and clears (22-of-26), but Siena controlled the faceoff battle, winning 15 of 25, which proved pivotal in the tightly contested matchup.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, March 28, when Marist travels to take on MAAC foe Quinnipiac. Gametime is set for 3 p.m.
