POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior captain defender
Mia Fernandes of the Marist University women's lacrosse team named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Bob McCloskey Insurance.
Fernandes has provided consistent leadership on and off the field for the Red Foxes, earning a captain role as a junior. Since arriving at Marist, she has started 36 of the 39 games she has appeared in, becoming a key piece of the team's defensive unit. As a freshman, she earned MAAC All-Rookie Team honors after recording 15 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.
This season, Fernandes has started all 11 games and ranks fourth on the team in both ground balls (13) and caused turnovers (12). On March 28, she recorded career highs of four caused turnovers and four ground balls to help lead Marist to a 14-8 victory over Iona.
In the classroom, Fernandes, an applied mathematics major, has excelled academically. She has been named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll in each of the past two seasons, earned MAAC All-Academic Team honors last year, and has been on the Dean's List every semester.
Fernandes is the fifth Marist student-athlete to be named MAAC Student-Athlete of the Week this season, following Dane Dillenback (swimming), Jackie Piddock (women's basketball), Jadin Collins-Roberts (men's basketball), and Sarah Bumstead (volleyball).
The Marist women's lacrosse team (3-8, 2-1) continues conference play at 2 p.m. on the road at Merrimack.
