Marist Opens Season With 2-2 Draw Against Stony Brook

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Marist University men's soccer team opened its 2026 season with a 2-2 draw against Stony Brook in a non-conference matchup on  a rainy Thursday night at Tenney Stadium.

"Effort was there tonight and there were moments to learn from," said head coach Matt Viggiano '99. "Stony brook is a good team and will be a force in the CAA. I was disappointed we let down the last 10 minutes of the first half and it cost us. Looking forward to Sunday and hosting Air Force."

The draw moves both teams to 0-0-1 to start the season.

How It Happened
  • The Red Foxes jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening 30 minutes. Graduate student Mani Diop opened the scoring in the ninth minute, finishing a flick-on from sophomore Ronan Hogg to give Marist an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Marist doubled its lead in the 28th minute when sophomore Miles Douglas found the back of the net following a corner kick from junior Evan Marques.
  • Stony Brook responded late in the opening half, scoring twice in a five-minute span to level the match at halftime. Lars Fahre cut the deficit to one in the 39th minute before Elliot Burgueno scored in the 44th minute to make it 2-2 heading into the break.
  • Neither team was able to find the decisive goal in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Alex Murania made three saves after halftime to keep the Seawolves off the scoreboard.
