POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Marist University men's soccer team fell to Ivy League opponent Cornell, 3-0, on Saturday evening at Tenney Stadium.
"They're a top-25 team for a reason, and I think we are still trying to find ourselves," said head coach Matt Viggiano '99. "In some respects, we were taught a little lesson tonight. Hopefully, we take that and be better moving forward."
With the loss, the Red Foxes drop to 0-1-2 to start the season, while the Big Red move to 1-0-0.
- Cornell opened the scoring in the 20th minute off the foot of Adam Schaban.
- The Big Red doubled their lead in the 63rd minute. After junior goalkeeper Alex Murania made an initial save, Liam May collected the rebound and blasted it into the back of the net.
- The Red Foxes' best chance came with just under 10 minutes remaining, as junior defender Evan Marques ripped a shot on a free kick just outside the box, but the Cornell goalkeeper made a diving stop.
- Cornell added one more goal in the 84th minute following a miscue by Murania. After collecting the ball, the junior goalkeeper rolled it out in front of him as if he was going to kick it long, but a Big Red attacker beat him to it and slotted it into the empty net.
- Cornell held the advantage in shots, 16-8, and shots on target, 8-2.
- The Big Red also won the corner kick battle, 5-3.
- Murania tallied five saves for the Red Foxes.
- The Red Foxes head to California for a matchup with Saint Mary's on Friday, Sept. 4.
- Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EST on ESPN+.
