POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Marist University men's soccer team wrapped its non-conference slate with a 2-2 draw against UAlbany on Tuesday evening inside Tenney Stadium.
"I think we played a poor 12 minutes, but the rest of the time I am pretty happy with the response," said head coach Matt Viggiano '99. "I hope we use this as a springboard into league-play, but the lesson is we have to play a full 90 for sure, but you take the result."
With the draw, Marist enters Metro conference play at 2-1-3.
- The Red Foxes controlled the opening half, recording seven shots and putting three on target
- Marist struck first in the 23rd minute, as Mani Diop sent the ball in on a throw-in to the foot of Caio Cavaletti. Cavaletti launched the ball into the far corner of the box on the foot of William Salivonchik, who snuck the ball past a defender and the keeper to give the Red Foxes the early advantage.
- After coming out of halftime with a 1-0, Marist relinquished a goal in the 50th minute after Alex Murania made the initial save on a shot from Ivar Gissurarsson before Gabriel Aron Saevarsson put the ball home on the rebound.
- UAlbany struck again in the 54th minute after Luca Clausse attempted to score on a free kick. Murania made the save before David Barkan followed the rebound and put UAlbany ahead 2-1.
- Marist was able to knot the contest at 2-2 in the 89th minute. Ben Mills dribbled the ball into the box and dropped a pass to the foot of Diop, who was able to turn and face and rocketed a shot off his right foot home to even the match.
- Marist outshot UAlbany 13-12
- The Red Foxes earned three corner kicks, while the Great Danes recorded seven.
- Junior goalkeeper Alex Murania tallied four saves
- Salivonchik led Marist with two shots on target
- The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when Marist hosts Mount St. Mary's in the Metro opener
- Kickoff from Tenney Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
