Diesa Seidel (Red Hook, NY) tallied her second double-double of the season (25 points, 14 rebounds) as she helped lead the Marist College Red Foxes to a thrilling overtime victory against MAAC rival Rider University, 83-80, in overtime at the McCann Center. The win brings the Red Foxes to 3-10 on the season and 2-2 in the MAAC while Rider falls to 3-10 on the season, 1-3 in the MAAC.
Marist broke out with a 12 point lead in the first half before Rider staged its comeback with several three point shots to tie the game at the 6:24 mark. Marist pulled ahead until two consecutive three point shots by Katie Kearon put Rider up 44-41. A jump shot by freshman Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) brought the Red Foxes within one to close the half 44-43.
The Broncs took charge in the second half as Marist tied the game three times before taking the advantage off of a Del Preore layup at 9:35. The lead changed hands three times before the Red Foxes broke away on a three-point field goal by junior Marie Fusci (Levittown, NY). Marist could not hold the lead as a pair of fouls brought the Broncs to the line to tie the game at 77 at the end of regulation.
The Red Foxes staked their claim on the victory when Sabrina Vallery (South Solon, OH), the other Red Fox to tally double figures, netted a pair of free throws to put Marist up by one at 1:17. Another perfect performance at the line by Vallery sealed the win for the Red Foxes as Marist closed out the game 83-80.
The Broncs were led by Tanya Cross who registered 23 points and five rebounds on the evening.
The Red Fox women's basketball team embarks on a two game road trip to face MAAC rival Loyola College on Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 and Rider University on Monday, January 15 at 7:00. Marist will return to action at the McCann Center on Friday, January 19.
