Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College volleyball team closed out the 2001 season with a 3-2 loss in five sets to Binghamton this evening in the McCann Center. Binghamton struck first, winning the first game 30-22. The Red Foxes then battled back gaining a 30-25 victory in the second game. The Bearcats jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the third game, before Marist rallied and took a one-point lead at 15-14. Binghamton responded with a run of its own and took the game 30-21. The Red Foxes battled back once again to force a fifth game after claiming a 30-25 win in the fourth game. In the deciding game Binghamton scored the first six points and never looked back winning the game 15-7 and the match 3-2.
During the match senior Julie Gosewisch (Severna Park, MD), who recorded 14 kills and 12 digs broke the Marist school record for kills in a season. Gosewisch ended the season with 318 kills breaking the previous mark of 307 set by Christin McKeon during the 1993 season.
The Red Foxes also received great performances from freshman Aline dos Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Christina Brozek (Fair Lawn, NJ). Dos Santos knocked down a team high 18 kills and recorded 12 digs, while Brozek hit .700 connecting on seven of 10 attempts and added nine digs for the Red Foxes.
The Binghamton attack was led by Morgan Jimerson (20 kills), Jennifer Smith (16 kills), and Michele Heck (15 kills).
Along with Gosewisch, the Red Foxes also honored fellow seniors Kelly Layden (Nutley, NJ) and Becky Woodworth (Exeter, NH) who were playing their final match wearing the red and white.
Marist ended the season with a 3-23 overall record and a 0-9 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Binghamton improved its record to 11-12 with the win.
