Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team won its home opener against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 59-51 tonight at the McCann Center. Head Coach Brian Giorgis earned his first win on the collegiate level, after the team fell in the season opener. This was the Red Foxes first win over New Hampshire since the 1985-86 season when Marist won with a score of 67-60. The series between the two teams is now tied 2-2.
The Red Foxes were down by eleven in the first half, but fought back to earn a tie going into half time when sophomore center Kristin Keller (Millbrook, NY) sunk a basket off a layup with 2:29 left.
The Wildcats came out hot in the second half going up by six on a three-pointer by Colleen Mullen. After a timeout by New Hampshire, the Red Foxes got their game going and tied it up on a three point shot from Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA). With the score being tied at 38, Marist took the lead for good when Keller hit a three with 7:10 remaining.
The Red Foxes were perfect from the line, going 12-12, with eight of them coming in the last 40 seconds. Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) finished the game 6-6 from the line, she also had five assists and a total of eight points.
Keller, Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY), and Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) all finished with ten points. Keller led the team in rebounds with eight. Freshman Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, NY) earned her first collegiate points when she hit a three pointer in the first half.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, December 1st, when they host American University in the McCann Center at 2:00 p.m. Marist opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play when they host Loyola on Friday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.
