A great team effort propelled the Red Foxes to a convincing third place finish in the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, held at Manhattan's Draddy Gymnasium on Saturday. The distance crew of senior
Liza Grudzinski (Branford, CT), sophomore
Jenn Rosenblatt (Naugatuck, CT), and junior
Jen Klier (Williamsville, NY) opened the scoring with a 2-3-4 placement in the 5,000-meters with times of 17:48.46, 18:22.62, and 19:06.99 respectively.
Junior Susan Golden (Vernon, CT) broke her school record with a second place finish in the mile (5:06.61), and easily won the 800-meters in 2:17.29 for her sixth MAAC championship gold. Freshman Alison Keller (Cheshire, CT) placed second in the high jump (5') and third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.45).
The women won gold in both relays. In the distance medley relay, Grudzinski and Rosenblatt were joined by senior Leanne Bolingbroke (Woodbury, CT) and sophomore Cheryl Norris (Schenectady, NY) crossing the line in a time of 12:47.30, 16 seconds over second place Iona. In the 4x400, Golden took the lead in the third leg to help sophomore Marissa Artiano (Palos Ranchos Verdes, CA), junior Clare Knapp (Poughkeepsie, NY), and sophomore Nicole Thompson (Kings Park, NY) to Marist's first ever 4x400 MAAC title.
The Red Foxes return to action at the ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass., on March 2-3.
