Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College softball team won two games against Yale University in extra innings 3-2 and 2-1 this afternoon at the Gartland Commons Athletic Fields. The doubleheader sweep improves the Red Foxes to 7-14-1, 1-1 MAAC on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 14-14-1, 1-3 Ivy.
In the first game Marist jumped on the board first with a run in the first inning off an RBI single from freshman Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA). The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Laura Beckert crosses the plate for Yale.
The Red Foxes regained the lead in the fifth behind a solo homerun from Rawson, her third of the season. A run in the sixth by the Bulldogs once again tied the game, 2-2.
Rawson, who was 4-4 with 3 RBI's in the game, then singled home junior Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the win. She improved to 4-3 on the year with her performance on the mound allowing five hits, no walks and striking out four. Jillian Miles (7-4) was on the losing end for Yale.
The second game saw more from Rawson who put the Red Foxes up 1-0 with an RBI single in the third, scoring McEvily. Shayna Filson then tied the game for the Bulldogs with her fourth homerun of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning. The contest remained tied 1-1 until the eight inning when McEvily reached on an error that scored freshman Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ) with no outs.
Freshman pitcher Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) earned the win after coming on in relief of junior Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) in the fifth inning. Blake (2-6) allowed just one hit in her three and a third innings of work. Filson (2-5) was the losing pitcher for the Bulldogs.
The Red Foxes will continue their homestand this weekend with MAAC double headers against St. Peter's on Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 PM and against Manhattan on Sunday, April 14th at 12:00 PM.
