Poughkeepsie, NY - The Red Foxes softball team fell twice to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Saint Peter's, losing the first game 3-1 and the second game 9-6 in eight innings this afternoon at the Gartland Commons Athletic Field.
In the first game, Marist fell behind early when the Peahens scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ) then put the Red Foxes on the board with an RBI single in the second inning cutting the lead to 2-1.
A solo home run by Aimee Barsalona in the third put Saint Peter's in front 3-1. Peahens pitcher Cathy Cresci (1-1) came on in relief with one out in the fourth inning and retired the final eleven Red Fox batters to earn the win. Freshman Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) (4-4) allowed just two earned runs, was on the losing end for Marist.
Game two saw the Red Foxes jump out to an early 2-0 lead behind a two run double in the first inning from junior Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ). The Marist lead was short lived as the Peahens scored six runs in the top of the second to move in front 6-2.
A pinch hit 2 run single by sophomore Meaghan Gosh (East Greenbush, NY) in the fourth inning brought the Red Foxes to within two at 6-4. The team then added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Barbara Leasure (Fairless Hills, PA) to cut the margin to 6-5.
Leading off the bottom of the seventh inning, Rawson the first pitch she saw over the left field fence to tie the game at 6-6 and force extra innings. The Peahens then scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth on two hits and three errors to complete the 9-6 victory.
Freshman Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA), allowed six hits and four unearned runs while falling to 2-6 on the year. Sandy Attanasio (7-7), who came on in relief in the seventh inning, picked up the win for Saint Peter's.
The losses dropped Marist to 7-16-1 overall and 1-3 in the MAAC, while the Peahens improved to 14-13 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 14th at 12:00 PM for another MAAC doubleheader against Manhattan.
