Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College softball team split a doubleheader with Manhattan, winning the first game 4-2 and losing the second 3-2 in 12 innings this afternoon at the Gartland Commons Athletic Field. The split leaves Marist at 8-17-1 overall and 2-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), while Manhattan now stands at 12-18 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC.
In game one, the Red Foxes scored two runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) and an RBI single from junior Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ). The jaspers then tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second behind a two-run double from Jennifer McCracken.
In the third inning Rawson, launched her fifth homerun of the year, a solo shot that put Marist ahead 3-2. She then scored a run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to give the Red Foxes a 4-2 lead.
On the mound, Rawson (5-4) allowed two runs on four hits, striking out seven on her way to her fifth win of the season. Candice Aulogia was dealt the loss for the Jaspers.
In the second game, Manhattan scored first notching two runs on three hits in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The lead held until the bottom of the sixth when a two out two run single up the middle by freshman Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) tied the game at 2-2.
The score remained the same until Manhattan pushed a run across in the top of the twelfth on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Haller to gain a 3-2 advantage. The Red Foxes threatened in the eleventh, but where unable to score after loading the bases with two outs. A line out double play then ended their chances in the twelfth. Senior Jessica Shorey (Scarborough, ME) went 3-4 and scored a run for the Red Foxes
Marist stayed in the game behind a great pitching effort from Blake (2-7), who allowed just one hit after the second inning before Rawson came on in relief in the twelfth. Blake struck out five and allowed four hits in 11 innings of work for Marist. Brianne Illanovsky who came on in the seventh inning for the Jaspers was the winning pitcher.
The Red Foxes will complete their homestand on Tuesday, April 16th with a doubleheader against St. John's starting at 3:00 PM
