Lawrenceville, NJ - The Marist College softball team split a doubleheader at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Rider, winning the first game 4-3 before dropping the second game 3-1 earlier today in Lawrenceville, NJ. Playing their first MAAC game of the year, the Red Foxes now stand at 1-1 in the conference and 5-14-1 overall, while the Broncs are 1-3 in the league and 8-21 overall.
Marist trailed early in the first game when Rider scored three runs in the second inning off freshman pitcher Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA), who improved to 3-3 with the win.
The Red Foxes rallied with a run in the fourth before completing the comeback with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. In the seventh Rawson atoned for all three runs by knocking a two out double to centerfield that cleared the bases.
Freshman Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ) was 3-4 at the plate and scored a run in the game for Marist. Rider was led by Heather Boyle with three hits and an RBI, pitcher Devin Karcesky fell to 5-9 with the loss.
Game two saw the Broncs score three unearned runs in the fourth inning off freshman pitcher Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA). The Red Foxes managed only three hits in the game, two coming from junior Amy Angus (Wolcott, CT), who scored the team's only run on a Rider error in the fifth inning.
Pitcher Maddy Boulden struck out five and had two hits at the plate on the way to her third win of the year for the Broncs.
The Red Foxes will return to action this Wednesday, April 10th at 3:00 PM with a doubleheader against Yale.
