Poughkeepsie, NY - The Red Foxes softball team ended an 11 game loosing skid with a 2-1 win in eight innings over Niagara after dropping the first game 4-0 earlier today at the Gartland Commons Athletic Fields at Marist College.
With the scored tied at 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, senior Meghan Fuller (Waverly, NY) and freshman Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) drew back to back walks. That set up freshman Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ), who doubled home Fuller to give Marist the 2-1 victory.
The Red Foxes received an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) (4-12) who twice retired 11 batters in a row and allowed just three hits in eight innings. Jamie Horn scored the only run for the Purple Eagles in the first inning, while Kristin Wille Brandt (2-14) was tagged with the loss after coming on in relief in the sixth inning.
In the first game, Niagara went ahead 1-0 with a run in the third inning before a two-run home run by Amanda Baluch in the sixth gave them a 3-0 advantage. The Purple Eagles then added another run in the seventh for the 4-0 victory.
The Red Foxes failed to get another hit in the game after their first three batters singled in the first inning. Ashleigh Barber (3-13) picked up the win, while Rawson was on the losing end for Marist.
The spilt puts Marist at 10-33-1 on the year and 4-10 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), while the Purple Eagles stand at 7-31 overall and 2-12 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will now close out their 2002 season tomorrow when they play host to Canisius in a double header starting at 11:00 AM
