Red Foxes Fall To Sacred Heart, 56-28

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Marist College football team saw its three-game win streak snapped this afternoon, as it fell to Sacred Heart University, 56-28 this afternoon. The Red Foxes are now 3-2 on the year, while the Pioneers improve to 4-1.

Marist struck first, as Willie Mosa, senior defensive lineman intercepted a Sacred Heart pass and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown 6:30 into the first quarter, to give Marist a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers would answer with 22 straight points to take a 22-7 lead in the second quarter. James Luft and the Red Foxes got the ball with 7:11 left in the half, and drove the ball 78 yards, capped by a Luft rushing touchdown with 22 seconds remaining, making the half time score 22-14.

After exchanging drives to open the third quarter, the Pioneers offense kicked into high gear, and tallied 21 points to take a 41-14 edge. All 21 points came within5:04, with a two-yard run with 6:38 left in the quarter, a 270yard pass with 5:34 left and a 19-yard run with 1:34 left in the quarter.

Sacred Heart tallied another score with 3:41 into the final stanza to take a 49-14 lead, before the Red Foxes would strike again.

Prince Prempah caught his first career touchdown pass, with 7:13 left, when Brian Kiraly found him in the end zone from 24 yards out. After a kickoff return for a touchdown gave the Pioneers their final score of the contest, Brad McGuire led an eight-play, 65 yard drive. McGuire would cap that drive with his first career touchdown, a one-yard dive into the end zone, making the final score 56-28.

Robert Thompson led the Red Foxes defensive effort with 11 tackles, one for a loss of five yards. John Healy continued to close on the school I-AA career tackle record, as he finished with 10 stops, one for a loss of yardage. Huck Correia, a rookie, continued to show his defensive prowess, as he closed with six tackles, one for a loss, and a forced fumble. Mosa added five stops to co along with his interception return, and Mike Drury had a fumble recovery, four tackles, and Matt Grande forces a fumble, to go along with three stops and one for a loss of yardage.

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, October 11th, as they return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Football League action, hosting LaSalle. The annual homecoming weekend game is set for a 1:00 pm kickoff on Leonidoff Field.
