POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Marist College (6-4, 2-0 MAAC) women's basketball team closed out the calendar year by coming from behind to topple a tough Delaware State (5-3) team 62-50 this afternoon at the McCann Center.
Led by Maureen Magarity's 16 points and four rebounds in the second half, the Red Foxes turned up the defensive pressure, holding the Hornets to just 19 points in the final 16:58. Magarity finished the day with a career-high 25 points on 9-12 shooting and a season-high nine rebounds, just missing her first double-double of the season. Magarity also recorded three assists and tied a career-high with 2 blocks in 35 minutes of play.
The Hornets took a 28-26 lead into half, but the Red Foxes came out firing in the second period, tying the game 33-33 on a Kerry Sullivan layup at the 15:57 mark. Sullivan then hit two free throws 30 seconds later to put Marist on top to stay. Sullivan played 11 minutes, scoring eight points and grabbing two rebounds.
Junior Kristin Keller recorded her second career double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Guard Nina Vecchio was also in double-figures with 11 points on 3-4 shooting from the floor, four assists, and three rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
For the Hornets, Terrelle Waller finished the day with a team-high 14 points. Najmah Fauntleroy chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
As a team, the Red Foxes shot 46.7 percent from the floor, while Delaware State shot just under 30 percent. Marist also outrebounded the Hornets 45-31.
The Red Foxes will be back on the court on Saturday, January 3rd as they head to Massachusetts to take on America East rival Boston University at 1:00pm.
