Riverdale, NY--The Manhattan College softball team swept a doubleheader from MAAC rival Marist College this afternoon in their home opener at Gaelic Park. The Lady Jaspers recorded a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the first game and shutout the Red Foxes 5-0 in the second game to improve to 5-12 on the season and 2-0 in the MAAC. Marist falls to 1-14 overall and 0-2 in the league.
In the first game, the Red Foxes snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth inning on a Manhattan fielding error. Marist added another run in the top of the seventh on a single by Kara Lacey (Cheshire, Conn.) to go up 2-0. But in the bottom of the seventh, Erika Kostik reached on a error by the pitcher and advanced to second on a single to right field by Jennifer McCracken. Then sophomore Margaret LaFex stepped in and clubbed a triple to centerfield, bringing around Kostik and McCracken and tie the game up at 2-2. LaFex then scored the game-winning run on a error by the third baseman.
Senior Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) pitched four shutout innings before giving the ball over to Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY), who took the loss. Candice Aulogia earned the victory, allowing two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. She is now 2-2 on the season. McCracken was 4-4 on the day while Suzie Masotto and LaFex also tallied a pair of hits in the victory.
In the second game, sophomore Brianne Illanovsky posted her first victory of the season by working six shutout innings. She walked seven but was able to work her way out of several jams. Illanovsky also struck out five batters and allowed only four hits. Sophomore Maura Langan was 3-3 with a pair of RBI in the game, while Melinda "Mo" Whitaker was 2-2 with an RBI-triple in the first inning.
For the Red Foxes, Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) went 2-3. Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) took the loss pitching six innings, giving up eight hits, five runs, while striking out one and walking three.
The Red Foxes return to action Sunday, March 30th, when they take on St. Peter's in Jersey City.
