Cambridge, MA-The Marist College softball team was swept, 11-1, 11-0 in its doubleheader against Harvard this afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Soldiers Field. The Red Foxes post a 6-23 record on the season.
Harvard scored three runs in the first and then erupted with seven runs in the second inning to jump out to a 10-0 lead after just two innings of play in game one. Harvard junior Rachel Goldberg hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the first and second innings, and junior tri-captain Louisa Canham knocked in two RBI in game one, after hitting a double to score both junior Sara Williamson and freshman Erin Halpenny.
Marist's Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) went 1-2 in the game, scoring the only run, while Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, NY) also went 1-2 at the plate. Melissa Ramos (Williston Park, NY) finished with the RBI for the Red Foxes.
Michele McAteer got the win, improving to 3-6 on the season, after allowing only two hits in five innings of work on the mound for the Crimson. Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) took the loss for the Red Foxes giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits, while also striking out two.
Both teams were scoreless in the first two innings of game two, but Harvard broke the silence in the third, after freshman Cara Woodard doubled and then came around to score on an error by Marist pitcher Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA). Stefanchik, who took first on the error, beat a play at the plate to put the Crimson out front, 2-0. Despite having the bases loaded Rawson was able to get her squad out of the inning without additional Harvard runs.
Woodard drilled her first career homerun to leftfield to give the Crimson a 4-0 edge in the fourth. The round tripper was the beginning of a nine-run inning for Harvard, including a two-RBI single by freshman Rachel Murray, as the Crimson cruised to an 11-0 victory.
McEvily and Rawson both went 1-2 for the Red Foxes, with Rawson also taking the loss on the mound.
Lauren Bettinelli remains a perfect 2-0, after striking out six Marist batters in five innings to get the victory.
The Red Foxes return to action Wednesday, April 16th, when they take on Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m. in a non-conference match-up.
