Worcester, Mass.-The Marist College softball team fell to Holy Cross, 3-2, 2-0, in a doubleheader held this afternoon at Freshmen Field. The Red Foxes are now 6-25 on the season.
In game one, the Crusaders struck right away in the top of the first inning when sophomore Mary Beth Ryan singled to centerfield, stole second base, and scored on a two out double to the centerfield wall by freshman Megan Lally. The double was Lally's sixth of the season. Marist rallied to score two runs off of starting pitcher Megan Manner in the third inning. Senior Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) singled in two runs, scored by Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) and Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ), to take a 2-1 lead. HC responded with the tying run in the bottom of the third when Ryan scored her second run of the game on a ground out by Melissa Beshire. The score remained 2-2 for the next six innings, until a single by senior tri-captain Alyssa Hayden drove in senior Suzanna Friel to win the game 3-2. Sophomore Michelle Greene picked up her third win of the season pitching two innings of relief.
In game two, HC scored two runs in the top of the first inning when Ryan and Friel both scored on wild pitches by Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA). The Red Foxes were shutout by junior Nicole Vitti, who gave up only three hits in seven innings. Vitti picked up her fifth win of the season with the victory.
The Red Foxes return to action Tuesday, April 22nd, when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale in a rescheduled non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m.
