Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College softball team split its doubleheader with conference rival Rider, winning the first game 3-2, and losing the second 3-2 on North Field this afternoon. The Red Foxes are now 7-28 overall and 4-8 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action.
In the first game, the Red Foxes got on the board early when Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) scored off a double by Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) in the bottom of the first. Senior Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) kept the Broncs scoreless through three before Kristin Kenavan tied it up with a solo homerun.
Marist took the second lead of the game when Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ) crossed the plate on a single by McHugh in the bottom of the fourth. For the second time in the game, the Broncs tied it up on a solo homerun in the top of the fifth by Amanda Tu.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) scored the winning run when Katie Eskin (Edison, NJ) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.
Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) got the win for the Red Foxes as she came in to relieve Fox, pitching two strong innings, giving up one hit, two walks, and striking out one. Rider's Devin Karcesky took the loss.
McEvily went 2-4 with an RBI, while McHugh went 1-4 with one run scored and an RBI.
In the second game, Rider took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth as they capitalized on a Marist error, scoring the first run of the game. The Broncs scored again on a double by Amanda Tu that scored Kristin Kenavan, and again when Erin McGlynn tagged up at third. The three runs proved to be enough for the win.
Marist broke through in the bottom of the fifth when McHugh scored as she tagged up at third on a groundout by McEvily. Gonnello knocked one out of the park to make it 3-2 with two outs.
Heather Beintema got the win for the Broncs, as Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) took the loss.
McHugh and Gonnello both went 2-3 in the game with a run scored.
The Red Foxes return to action Tuesday, April 29th at 3:30 p.m. when they face non-conference opponent Seton Hall on North Field.
