Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College softball team dropped its doubleheader to the Seton Hall University Pirates, 3-0 and 15-4, this afternoon on North Field. The Red Foxes are now 7-30 on the season, while the Pirates improved to 34-11.
In the first game, Seton Hall scored in the top of the first when Laura Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring McKenzie Richards, who singled to lead off the inning. In the top of the sixth Anne Leone drove in Caitlin and Mary Carroll Smith when she singled to center, making the score 3-0.
Seton Hall's Christina Shanko got the win, pitching five innings, giving up only three hits, while striking out three. Casey McDevitt came in on relief pitching two innings, struck out three and walked one. Senior Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) took the loss pitching 5 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs, walking two, and striking out one before Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) came in to pitch 1 1/3 innings, with one strike out.
Smith went 1-2 with a run scored, while Leone went 1-3 with two RBI to lead the Pirates. For the Red Foxes, Kara Lacey (Cheshire, Conn.) hit 1-2 with a walk, while Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) and Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) went 1-3.
The second game saw the Pirates take another early lead when they scored three in the top of the first. Taylor hit a two-run homerun, scoring Katie Pierce before Meg Berry singled to score Smith.
Gonnello hit her second homerun in as many days in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1. The Red Foxes took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Lacey, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on a bunt by Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ). Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) doubled to left field with two outs, scoring Meaghan Gosh (East Greenbush, NY) and Bartley.
The lead was short-lived when Seton Hall scored 12 in the top of the fifth. Tracy Myhren scored the winning run when she crossed the plate on a wild pitch. D'Arcy Djakalovic hit a three-run homerun to left field, scoring Akoua Lonergan and Pierce, making the score 14-5. The Pirates would score one more before the inning was over to end the game due to the eight-run rule.
Taylor went 3-3 for Seton Hall, with one run scored and two RBI, while Pierce and Smith each went 2-3. Djakalovic went 1-1 with three RBI, while Katie Flynn also hit 1-1 with three RBI.
McHugh and Katie Eskin (Edison, NJ) each went 2-3 for Marist, while Gonnello went 1-2 with one run scored and an RBI. Lacey finished 1-3 with a run scored for the Red Foxes.
Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) took the loss for Marist going 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits, eight earned runs, while striking out two and walking two. Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) came in to pitch relief, giving up five hits, seven runs, with two earned. Moyer also pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up just one hit.
Megan Meyer got the win for the Pirates, giving up nine hits, four runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking one. McDevitt closed out the game, striking out one and giving up no hits.
The Red Foxes return to action Friday, May 2nd when they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on Canisius at 3:00 p.m. and Niagara on Saturday, May 3rd at 12:00 p.m. to wrap up the 2003 season.
