Softball Splits Doubleheader With Fairfield; 7-3, 4-3

Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College softball team split its doubleheader this afternoon with the Fairfield University Stags, losing the first game 7-3, while winning the second game 4-3. The second game helped the Red Foxes earn their first conference victory. Marist improves to 4-17 overall, and 1-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action.

In the first game, the Red Foxes had a 1-0 lead after one inning when Fairfield's Mellissa Santos walked Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, NY) with the bases loaded. The Stags went on to score four runs in the top of the third with Molly Harris starting the inning with a double to left field and scoring on a double by Tara Hansen. Hansen was able to score on a double by Laura Sandonato, while Shannon Logan had two RBI in the inning when she knocked a double to left field, scoring Sandonato and Megan Miller.

That was all the Stags needed as the Red Foxes only scored twice more in the game.

Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) pitched a complete game giving up 12 hits, striking out five and walking none. Santos also went the distance, striking out seven, walking seven and gave up seven hits.

Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) went 2-4, while Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) went 1-3 for the Red Foxes.

In the second game, the Red Foxes once again took the early lead, scoring in the bottom of the first when Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ) tagged up on Kara Lacey's (Cheshire, Conn.) pop foul out. Starting pitcher, Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) kept the Stags scoreless through three, until Brie Zimmerman scored on a Ellen Sarosy single to center field, making the score 3-1.

Fairfield tied it up in the top of the seventh Sarosy scored on a wild pitch by Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) who came in to relieve Blake in the top of the inning. The Red Foxes won the game on an error by the Stags first baseman when Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, NJ) crossed the plate.

Gonnello and Rawson each went 2-3 in the game, while McHugh went 1-3 for Marist.

Blake pitched six innings, striking out two, walking none, and giving up nine hits. Christy Urban pitched 6 2/3 innings, walking one, striking out five and giving up seven hits.

The Red Foxes return to action Sunday, April 6th, when they host Iona at 1:00 p.m. on North Field.
