Women's Softball Sweeps Iona; 6-5, 3-2

Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's softball team swept its doubleheader with the Iona College Gaels, 6-5, 3-2, this afternoon on North Field. The Red Foxes have now won three straight and five of their last six to improve to 6-17 overall and 3-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The Gaels fall to 4-13 on the season and 0-2 in MAAC action.

The first game was a pitcher's dual, going 10 innings before freshman Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) hit a single to left center, scoring Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) for the winning run, ending the marathon.

Red Fox pitcher Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) pitched five shutout innings before giving up a homerun to Iona's Kate Giella. The Gaels scored again in the seventh when Lindsay John singled, scoring Danielle Grasso. The Red Foxes tied it up in the bottom of the seventh when Meaghan Gosh (East Greenbush, NY) doubled to centerfield, scoring Barbara Leasure (Fairless Hills, PA) and Rawson.

The score remained tied until the tenth, when Iona struck first scoring three runs beginning with a double by John, scoring Grasso to take the lead. Senior shortstop, Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) knocked a double to right field, scoring Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ). Blake walked with the bases loaded tying the game at five before McHugh hit the game-winner.

Blake (2-4) pitched a complete game, striking out two, walking three, and giving up eight hits in 10 innings. Alison Higgs (4-4) pitched 9 2/3 innings, striking out two, walking three, and giving up 12 hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Marist took the lead in the third inning, scoring two runs when Rawson doubled, scoring Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) and Rawson. Marist got an insurance run in the sixth when Leasure grounded out to second scoring Rawson. Iona scored in the top of the fourth when Amanda Pucci hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Suzan O'Shea. They added one more run in the top of the seventh.

Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) earned her second victory of the season, pitching a complete game, striking out three, walking two, and giving up six hits. Amy Burdette pitched six innings, striking out four, walking one and giving up seven hits for the Gaels.

The Red Foxes return to action Tuesday, April 6th, when they travel to West Point, NY to take on the Army Black Knights at 5:00 p.m. in a match-up that was rescheduled from March 11th.
